Research: 3D Printed Textiles

3D printing is a hot topic at the moment.  It’s a technology that has been around for over 20 years, but it is only until recently that it has been used in fashion and textiles. In the last couple of years a few fashion designers have been experimenting with creating clothing and accessories via 3D printing. Whilst researching this subject I discovered the work of Bradley Rothenberg[1]Rothenberg, B. (2014) Bradley Rothenberg [Online] Available from: http://www.bradleyrothenberg.com/ [Accessed 22 Nov 2014]., an architect who is currently working on developing 3D printed fabrics that he is calling ‘cellular textiles[2]Rothenberg, B. (2014) Bradley Rothenberg: Cellular textiles [Online] Available from: http://www.bradleyrothenberg.com/cellular-textiles/ [Accessed 22 Nov 2014].. ‘If you picture a chainlink fence then you can understand the basic concept behind Rothenberg’s fabrics. The textiles are made up of interlocking strands of 3D printed material that create a flexible mesh'[3]Grunewald, S. Available from: http://3dprintingindustry.com/2014/10/31/3d-printed-textiles-bradley-rothenberg/ [Accessed 22 Nov 2014].. Rothenberg has collaborated with a number of fashion designers, including Katja Leonovich[4]Grunewald, S. Textiles are traditionally made in two ways; weaving and knitting. According to Rothenberg ‘3D printing gives us a new method for making textiles consisting of 3-dimensional interlocking units…As the resolution of 3D printers improve, this method will become the new “jacquard loom” for textile making'[7]Rothenberg, B. (2014) Bradley Rothenberg: Cellular textiles [Online] Available from: http://www.bradleyrothenberg.com/cellular-textiles/ [Accessed 22 Nov 2014].. This new approach to textiles opens up limitless possibilities with shape and intricate detailing. It’s really inspiring to see a different way of constructing a flexible fabric-like structure. A recent article written in Home Textiles Today says that ‘when it comes to textiles, 3D printing appears to be in its infancy, but the infant shows a lot of promise'[8]Karp, J. (2014) ‘3d Printing Redesigns Housewares Design’. Home Textiles Today, 35 (1): 30-36.. During my research I have found many interesting and very current articles on the subject of 3D printing in all areas of design, including fashion and textiles, and I’m really interested to see where this trend will lead and how it will develop in the future.

Bradley Rothenberg talks about his work developing complex interlocking structures to create a material that resembles the properties of a fabric. He sees his current work as a model that could be scaled down in the future as technology progresses. I’m interested in finding out more about the metal plating technique he has been working on with a company called Epner. I really like the appearance of metal and it’s a material I would like to work with. The video[11]Cellular textile samples_4. (2014) [Vimeo] Rothenberg, B. Available from: http://vimeo.com/105699597.
