Yoga Now: Knitwear Designer & Yoga Teacher

Having just completed my 200 hours of training, I am now certified to teach yoga. I have practiced yoga for years and I’m really excited to share it with other people. This is not the end of my design work, this is just the beginning of a new path that will continue alongside my work as a knitwear designer. Why have one career when you can have two?! Knitting and yoga actually have a lot in common; they are both considered therapeutic and take a lot of patience and concentration!

I discovered yoga in 2006 when I was living in New York. I knew nothing about yoga at this point and I have to admit that I didn’t enjoy my first class! It was a bit overwhelming and I didn’t like the teachers voice!…silly, but actually very important! I knew that I had to give it another go and tried different classes until I found a few I liked. Initially I was drawn to yoga for its physical benefits. I had done gymnastics as a child, so I really enjoyed stretching and building my strength. But I soon discovered that there was a lot more to yoga than just that.

It was a very stressful time of my life and I was working incredibly long hours. I barely had time to sleep, never mind fit in a yoga class! But I started to prioritise yoga in my life, because it was a moment of calm in my hectic schedule. It became a time of day when I could forget about the stresses, worries and concerns of life. It went from being a physical exercise to so much more. I learnt to focus on my breath, drawing my senses inward and concentrating on the present moment. After each class I started to notice a lightness in my body and mind. As if I was floating, with a new found sense of freedom.

Anyone can practice yoga and feel the benefits. It is not just for the super flexible and it isn’t about forcing your body into uncomfortable positions. Yoga is not competitive. Everyone has a different body, with different capabilities and limitations. Accepting this and appreciating what you have right now is key. The asanas (the physical poses) are only a small part of yoga. I look forward to sharing this practice with others. I will be teaching ten free classes of Vinyasa flow in the next couple of months. If you’d like to participate, please send me a message and if possible I will try to arrange a class near you.
